Separation anxiety - excrutiating for everyone involved - mum, - TopicsExpress

Separation anxiety - excrutiating for everyone involved - mum, dad, child, teacher, other parents and children. So what are some useful approaches to diminishing that anxiety? 1. Talk early and talk often. Often parents think that ignoring it until it has to be faced is the solution but this is rarely true. 2. Use pictures - of where to hang up the bag, eat lunch, toilets.... to create a sense of belonging and familiarity for your child. 3. Use a small comfort object. A small toy like the ones on key rings, a pebble with a smiley face... helps your child to still feel connected to you. Use imagination - squeeze some love into that object and leave it there for school. 4. Find or create stories about being safe and secure, about another child who was worried and then bravely got through the day and Mum/Dad/Nanna... was waiting right there at the end of the day. Lots of conversation and strategies early gives your child a good run up at being successful in the moment. If your child has been anxious when separating before, what have you done that worked and was helpful?
