Separatists caged Geelani, Mirwaiz, Malik Under House Arrest; Others Lodged In Police Stations Srinagar, July 13: Chairmen of both factions of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Muhammad Yasin Malik were put under house arrest while several others lodged in police stations on martyrs’ day. Javed Mir and several other separatistleade rs were arrested after they defied restrictions and tried to marchtowards martyrs graveyard in Khanyar area of old Srinagar. Geelani continues to be under house arrest since February this year. Since Friday evening, heavy contingents of policemen were deployed at residences of most of other separatist leaders and they were informed about their house arrest Saturday morning. A statement of Hurriyat Conference (M) said that apart from restricting lakhs of people inside their houses, the authorities put APHC Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and other Hurriyat leaders under house detention since Friday evening in a bid to make the July 13 programme unsuccessful. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a statement said that the Government should not have restricted the people in this holy month of Ramadhan. He said that by putting the pro-freedom leaders under house arrest will not deter them to continue their struggle. Mirwaiz said that by preventing the people from paying tributes to the martyrs of July 13, 1931 proves the tall claims of democracy have fallen flat. “By placing curfew and restrictions to stop peaceful processions, it has become clear that authorities are fearful of the unity and unflinching association of public with the freedom movement,” he said. Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Muhammad Yasin Malik has been placed under house arrest from last night. JKLF spokesman said here that police and forces cordoned off the residence of JKLF chairman and placed him under house arrest last night. Yasin Malik condemned the police action especially arresting district president Kulgam Abdul Satar from his residence today. Chairman National Front, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, told Greater Kashmir that it is an irony that while Kashmir observes Government holiday on the Martyrs Day but the so-called Government does not allow people to come out of their homes so that they could pay homage to their martyrs. Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) Chairman Shabir Ahmad Shah was put under house arrest soon after he tried to march towards martrys graveyard. Heavy contingents of police and CRPF arrived at Shah’s house and placed him under detention. Firdous Shah of Democratic Peoples Movement was also put under house arrest. Senior Hurriyat leader Bilal Ghani Lone along with several Hurriyat activists visited martyrs grave Handwara and paid rich tributes to them. Javed Ahmad Mir, Chairman Muslim Conference Shabir Ahmad Dar, Chairman Islamic Political Party (JK) Muhammad Yusuf Naqash, Chairman International Forum for Justice and Human Rights Muhammad Ahsan Untoo, pro-freedom leader Muhammad Yasin Ataai and other Freedom Party workers and activists left for martyrs graveyard but police intercepted them near Residency Road and prevented them from moving ahead. They were lodged in Kothibagh Police Station. Police stopped the vehicles of Freedom Party activists in various areas who were heading towards Mazaar-e-Shohad a. Jammu and Kashmir Peoples League Chairman Mukhtar Waza was arrested by police at Kadipora in south Kashmir’s Islamabad (Anantnag) district. A party spokesman said here that he was on way to lead a procession on Martyrs Day and was scheduled to pay tributes to 1931 martyrs at Martyrs Graveyard at Reshi Mohalla. Police shifted Waza to police station Sherbagh. Senior Hurriyat leader and Chairman JKSM Zaffar Akber Bhat along with activists was arrest by police in civil lines while they were on way to Martyrs Graveyard at Naqshband Sahib here. A party spokesman said here Zaffar Akbar Bhat, Zulfiqar Hameed, M Shafi, Muzaffar Malik, Farooq Ahmed, Molvi Mushtaq Ahmed, Molvi Rashid, Bilal Kashmiri, Javed Ahmed were taken to Channapora police station. Another march led by Agha Syed Hassan Al Moosvi was also stopped by police and Army while it was on way to Srinagar Jamia Masjid. The Hurriyat workers took out a rally from Mirgund, however it was foiled by the authorities. Other Hurriyat leaders who were arrested included Syed Bashir Andrabi, Hakim Abdullah Rashid, GN Zaki, Muhammad Shafi Khan, Yaqoob Masoodi. Leader of Hurriyat Conference (M) andIn- charge of Gujjar and Pahari affairs,Choudha ry Shaheen Iqbal has paid rich tributes to the martyrs of July 13,1931, reiterating the pledge to takew their mission to its logical end.
