Sepher ha-Zohar: "Book of Splendor"- The Sepher ha-Zohar or "The Book of Splendor." Written in a pseudo-Aramaic style, the Zohar is primarily a series of mystical commentaries on the Five Books of Moses (the Pentateuch). Set in an imaginary Palestine, the Zohar describes a series of dialogues between Simeon ben Yohai and his disciples concerning the ten sephiroth. The Zohar shows the influence of Neoplatonism, as well as the influence of Joseph Gikatilla, a medieval Spanish Qabalist and friend of Moses de Leon. In recent years, twentieth century scholars such as Gershom Scholem were able to demonstrate that Moses de Leon was the real author of the Zohar (see Scholem, Kabbalah, 57-61). Nevertheless, many traditional scholars still maintain that Simeon ben Yohai wrote the Sepher ha-Zohar.
