Sept 15, 2014 meeting at Twinspirations Congratulations to Tom - TopicsExpress

Sept 15, 2014 meeting at Twinspirations Congratulations to Tom Lilly for winning Best Table Topics Monday night. Tom answered the question what is the most important advice you can give a job seeker. Tom talked about the importance of having a passion for your work. Too many people never work at what they love. So they dont love their job. Somehow we have to find a way to pursue our passion in our work. Tom talked about how he loved Geology in College but didnt pursue his passion. The irony now, Tom said, is all I see are job opportunities related to Geology. Go figure. Since we had one speaker and one evaluator we did not take a vote. Tom Mazanec was the speaker and gave a great demonstration speech from his Speaking to Inform Advanced manual, The Demonstration Talk. The title of his speech was: The Worlds Cheapest Airplane. He walked the group through the making of a svelte paper airplane and then he held a contest to see whose plan flew the farthest. See the attached short video as Tom demonstrated the flight of his Super Sonic Transport. Technical difficulties prevented our filming the entire group testing their flights. Jay Narayanan flew his plane the farthest and he won a $5.00 Starbucks gift card as his reward. His estimated distance was 75 feet. It was a lot of fun for all. Nice job Tom. A very creative idea. Tom Lilly gave a nice evaluation of Toms Mazanecs speech and pointed out how Tom had a great attention getting opening: Want to have some great fun with a child, or have some fun yourself? The phrase Worlds Cheapest Airplane was also effective. Who can disagree with cheap fun? Tom L. suggested to improve the speech try to maintain more eye contact rather than focus on making your own airplane. However, Tom needed to have a sample plan to show what it looked like each step of the way. Tom said you can get some books that show dotted lines where the folds are to be made; this might make it a little easier to demonstrate the how to do it piece. Tom Lilly also loved the contest at the end. He felt it drew the speech to a fun and entertaining climax. Nice evaluation Tom. Please bring your airplane book to the next meeting.
