September 09, 2013 Dear Editor: Chino Valley Unified School District # 51 does NOT allow elementary children to participate in physical education. According to Boston Children’s Hospital: “Exercise is always important for growing children, regardless of diabetes. When exercise is combined with the right amounts of food and insulin, it will help keep your child healthy and her blood glucose levels will remain in balance” (childrenshospital.org/az/Site1797/mainpageS1797P1.html 9 September 2013) Physical education is not mandatory in the State of Arizona. Each district can chose to have P.E., or chose not to. Children need exercise. It helps them concentrate in the classroom, and it helps their bodies develop strong muscles. P.E. does not cost any money. A regular classroom teacher can show children how to play physical games such as tag that don’t require any equipment. P.E. is as free as the air we breathe. Without P.E., our children are at risk of developing diabetes, gaining weight, and all of the physical ailments associated with lack of exercise. America needs healthy children, not fat blobs. If your school district does not have a PE program, I urge you to stand up for your children and demand they be provided with adequate exercise, each and every day. Julie Young 1154 E.
