September 12 is celebrated as the birth of the marathon race. Legend states that on this day in 490 B.C., Pheidippides, a Greek solider, ran for 25 miles from the battleground in Marathon to Athens to announce the Greek victory over the Persian army. Upon announcing the victory, Pheidippides allegedly collapsed and died. The celebration of this legend/historic event eventually lead to the modern day marathon running event. As many of you know, the marathon distance is now 26.2 miles. This dates back to the 1908 Olympic games in London when the marathon distance was changed to 26.2 miles so the race could include the Windsor Castle and appease the royal family.
