September 15, 2014 For Immediate Release - Creating Industrial Parks and Increasing City Revenue With an ever increasing cost to running the city of Greater Sudbury council must look at ways to generate revenue without having citizens open their wallets because of high rate of taxes we experience day in and day out. How is this going to happen? One solution lies within Industrial Parks, an industry in itself that Greater Sudbury is in dire need of. As we are all aware through the media the mining companies in Greater Sudbury employ a vast majority of our citizens. Unfortunately as many of us are finding out these mining giants are moving their facilities underground to circumvent having to pay municipal taxes on things like their buildings. If elected Jeff Huska has a plan to not only increase revenues lost by these companies but also to increase the number of industrial parks we currently have. “Since these companies are finding ways to lower their taxes we as a city need to look at ways to create revenue’ Huska said. “If they want to move their operations underground to save in taxes there isn’t much the city can do to stop them. But I’d lobby these mining companies to lease their surface land to the city at a cost of $1/yr for 100 years.” Huska goes on to say that since they aren’t using the land in areas such as the West End of Greater Sudbury to Azilda and along Regional Road 80 to the Valley let the city utilize it for revenue income. “The city can develop the land for industrial parks, lease the land for companies to set up their business and tax them as with any other company in the city. Greater Sudbury receives dollars from leasing the land, municipal land taxes and any and all taxes generated by the people working in these industrial parks”. Huska goes on to say that not only does this idea recuperate lost revenue for the city; it also creates new revenue streams in leasing land. Altogether, this idea is a win-win and creates new employment opportunities at the same time. “If the mining giants want to show commitment to the city this is one of the best ways. It allows us to partner with them to maximize land usage and generate revenue for the city. All at no expense to these mining companies while providing great incentives for businesses to set up shop here.”
