September 17, 1944: 70 years ago today, Allied forces launch Operation Market Garden, the largest airborne assault in history, involving over 35,000 men, 2,500 drop planes, and over 2,000 wooden gliders. The plan was to seize all the bridges along a 64 mile highway in the Netherlands, enter Germany from the north, and end the war by Christmas. It was ultimately a disastrous operation marked by overconfidence and poor planning, but also by heroism and incredible ingenuity that made a lasting impression on everyone who participated in it. Last year Audrey Lomax and I were fortunate enough to visit many of the sites of the operation I will be commemorating the 70th anniversary this year by posting updates from each day of the operation about what happened during that day (so be prepared for history spam).
