September 17th -- Proverbs 17 "He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the just, both of them alike are an abomination to the Lord" v.15 There is much here that is so relevant for our culture today though it was written some three thousand years ago. The Word of God in this regard is truly amazing to me! Something written so long ago, in a totally different culture, so far from our advanced and great society, talks directly to us. The Word of God gives us wisdom and understanding, speaking to our great needs and failings! The Lord is the only One who can truly justify the wicked. Justify means to take care of the issue of sin, to atone for our sins and give us freedom from sin as well. It is impossible for us to do this, we have no ability for this at all! Job which is oldest book of the Bible drives this point home with clarity and authority. There needs to be a Mediator which Job cried out for, sensing his inability to cross the great gulf he sensed between him and the Lord. So if only the Lord can do this, only the Lord is the True Vine and Source of spiritual Light and Life, then when a human being tries to step into this place what they are literally doing is trying to take the place of God! Impossible! But that will not stop them from believing the lie of the serpent, just as Adam and Eve did, "you will be god". And so the lie continues, you can be god. You can judge and condemn while you are committing the most serious of sins, the spiritual one of pride. It got lucifer expelled from Heaven which he then used on Adam and Eve, who fell for the same lie and the garden became a wasteland. But thank God for the work of Jesus who came to justify us by laying down His Life in our place, that our wasteland might become a garden! He is the God of restoration!!!
