September 21,1863- The remainder of the beaten Army of the Cumberland stand their ground at Rossville throughout the day. General Thomas withdraws his men to Chattanooga and takes strong defensive positions. General Bragg cancels the Confederate pursuit and instead considers a seige on the city. Fighting was around Rossville, Lookout Church and Dry Valley, Georgia. President Lincoln wires General Burnside and tells him to immediately move his army from East Tennessee and aid Rosecrans. He then wires Rosecrans and insures the General that he (Lincoln) has complete confidence in him and to take a strong defensive position.
