September 22: In those days, King Herod laid hands upon some members of the Church to harm them. He had James, the brother of John, beheaded by the sword, and when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews he proceeded to arrest Peter also.---It was the feast of Unleavened Bread.---He had him taken into custody and put in prison under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each. He intended to bring him before the people after Passover. Peter thus was being kept in prison, but prayer by the Church was fervently being made to God on his behalf. (Acts 12:1-5, NAB) Prayer: [Excerpted from the hymn God of Grace and God of Glory (1930) by Harry Emerson Fosdick (May 24, 1878 - Oct. 5, 1969); see August 20 and 23 of Praying with the Psalms for the third and last verses. This, ironically has the same tune as the 1745 hymn Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer by William Williams Pantycelyn (Feb. 11, 1717 - Jan. 11, 1791; see also March 1 and June 13 of Praying with the Psalms for the first and second verses).] Lo! the hosts of evil ’round us Scorn thy Christ, assail his ways. From the fears that long have bound us, Free our hearts to faith and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, For the living of these days, For the living of these days. Amen. youtube/watch?v=hc7_GLCRLkI
