September 24, 2014 For immediate release: Food Drive in Bayonne Schools and Two BCB Bank Branches for Make A Difference Day Mayor Jimmy Davis is pleased to announce that the Bayonne Board of Education, participating private schools, and BCB Community Bank are conducting a city wide food drive from October 1 through October 24. The drive is part of the annual, nationally organized Make A Difference Day activities, which encourage volunteerism across America. National Make A Difference Day this year is Saturday, October 25. Mayor Davis said, “The Make A Difference Day food drive provides the school community and the general public the opportunity to help restock our local food pantries. Many of our fellow Bayonne residents depend on these pantries to help feed themselves and their families.” Mayor Davis continued, “I would like to thank the people of Bayonne for continuing their generosity to this annual food drive in 2014.” As in past years, the Bayonne Police Department’s Community Policing Officers are coordinating the food drive in conjunction with the Bayonne Board of Education, Marist High School, All Saints Catholic Academy, Beacon Christian Academy, BCB Community Bank, and the Bayonne Department of Public Works. Imperial Bag and Paper has donated boxes once again for the transporting and storing of food. The citys numerous educational institutions are sending, or have sent, notices home with each student to explain the food drive. The schools and BCB Community Banks 48th Street and North Street branches will serve as drop-off points for donations. Students participating in the food drive should bring packaged, non-perishable food items to school by October 24, and may start as early as October 1. Members of the general public may bring packaged, non-perishable food to the donation boxes at the 48th Street and North Street BCB Bank branches during banking hours from October 1 through October 24. The Department of Public Works will be performing pickups from these locations on October 27 and 28, depending on location, and will deliver the collected items to ten local non-profit organizations and religious congregations that have food pantries: the Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation (BEOF), First Assembly of God Church, Friendship Baptist Church, Highways/Windmill Alliance, Our Lady of the Assumption Church, St. Andrew’s Church, St. Henry’s Church, St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, St. Vincent’s Church, and Wallace Temple A.M.E. Zion Church. Suggested non-perishable food items include: canned tuna fish, boxed cereal, pasta sauce, canned fruits, canned or boxed pastas, oatmeal, pudding cups, rice, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, and jelly. Nationally, Make A Difference Day 2014 is sponsored by USA Weekend Magazine, NBC, and Points of Light, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to volunteer service.
