September 24th - Wed - On the Road Again By Carol Buzalsky — 22 minutes ago Its been roller coaster of a ride since the last time I updated. Mom, even with no oral food or liquids has continued to have bouts of vomiting and nausea most of the time. Her tube feedings have been at times turned down to exteme minimums. Its caused her to be weaker than she had been and to be very lethargic and tired. In addition Monday was a doctor change for the new rotation for the week. It caused some confusion and communication issues. I requested for continuity of care that if possible to keep mom with a provider she had before. So late in the day yesterday we were told that Dr. Newman did not want to do the heart surgery and that we were being switched back to a Hospitalist doctor that she had a few weeks ago. In working with the Case manager and social worker on Tuesday and today it was decided to have a care conference and to get everyone on the same page. So when I received a phone call from Dr. Potluri asking if I could visit with him this afternoon I asked if it was the care conference thinking if so I should call other family members to be there as well. He told me it wasnt the care conference and he just wanted to visit with me. So I head to the hospital and waited and waited to find out he was looking in the other waiting room for me and he was also on the phone discussing moms case with Sanford doctors and Mayo doctors. He was determined to make sure mom had the best chances possible at having a positive outcome. She has fought this long and this hard, the infection is dormant in her body so that would not be a reason to not do surgery, and she is stable from a mental and physical perspective except for her heart and nutrition. The question is, if mom doesnt have the valve replacement what would the course of care be and how long can she have any type of life with her damaged heart. The answer was Mayo wants to see her again. The cardiologists and CV surgeon agreed to review moms case and see mom and then make a decision from there. So at 6 am mom will be transported by ambulance back to St. Marys Rochester while Marlene and I follow in our cars. So we are on the road again. I spent the last few hours trying to absorb this news and make travel, hotel and friends house arrangements as well as trying to take care of the meetings and projects I have going on at work the next few days. Oh and trying to hurry and get clothes washed and dried to pack! Our favorite hotel the Fiksdahl in Rochester that DeAnn and Marlene stayed at for many many weeks is booked the next few weeks except for Sat and Sun nights. Thankfully there is a room at the hotel next to it with a room open for Thurs and Friday nights. I more than likely will stay at Sylvias again but depending on how the first few days progress may just stay across the street instead of about 10 minutes away. And to think, just this weekend when I opened the center console in my car and my parking pass for St Marys fell out I thought I really should send this to Sylvia or find someone that could use it. Well, I guess I found someone to use it - me! Jean and Ralph came to Fargo to visit mom today. I was at work so I missed getting to see them. As soon as we found out about the plans Marlene called Dad at work so he left work to come and see mom this evening before she transfers to Mayo. DeAnn and Nathan also as a fluke were to visit mom after Nathan was done with school but had to head back so he could get to his confirmation class. Keep those prayers coming. Mom continues to need them.
