September 25th - Mary Brigh 5C By Carol Buzalsky — 17 minutes ago What a trooper mom is! She did so well on the long uncomfortable bouncy ambulance ride from Fargo to Mayo. Marlene and I had a foggy morning drive from Fargo. We were each in our own cars so we used the cell phones to check in with each other. We arrived pretty much at the same time as mom so I walked into her room at St. Marys Mary Brigh wing about the time they were moving her onto the bed in her room. She is in 5C the cardiac care area of the hospital. So another floor and room set up to get used to and find our way around. She has her own room again which is wonderful. She faces another building so we see a hallway but at least she has a large bank of windows and will get natural light. Its been the normal at Mayo of checking out mom from top to bottom. Her PICC line has moved from its original position so that will be removed and a normal IV line will be used for medications. Mom has slept most of the afternoon in-between doctors coming in to check on her. Mom was pretty uncomfortable when she first arrived but being back into a bed and napping has helped lessen her pain and settle in. Cardiology has been reviewing moms case and evaluating her current situation. If mom doesnt/cant have surgery the heart valve regurgitation will likely cause shortness of breath, congestion in the veins, bowels, liver, and lower extremity swelling. The other option is valve replacement surgery which is a major procedure. So the question is can mom survive the surgery and recover from such an intense procedure and if so should the surgery be done as soon as possible or should it be done after additional recovery. The complicating factor is her lack of nutrition she has had due to nausea and vomiting and is the heart issue causing that or is something else. So at this time we know the doctors are studying her case, a TEE (the heart echo done with the scope via the mouth) will be done, and a CV surgeon will be consulted. I will update again tomorrow.
