Nehemiah was a cupbearer and scribe to the Persian king Artaxeres (464-423 B.C.). Nehemiah is given permission to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the city. He gains financial and material support from the Persian king and letters from the king giving him safe passage and authority to repair the city of Jerusalem. The contingency of people is numbered at just under 50,00o people. Against opposition from several influential men the Jews rebuild the walls of Jerusalem in 52 days. In Nehemiah 8, Ezra, the priest, calls together all the people and reads the Book of the Law of Moses. This reading of the Law started at day break and when until noon. We are told they read the Law, making it clear and giving instructing the people so that they could understand what was being read. Finally, Nehemiah, Ezra and the Levites who had been teaching the people sent they away with instructions to rejoice and stop mourning and weeping because ALL the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. The song today is titles “He leadeth me.” To be lead you need to listen to instruction. Are you reading you bible and praying? Are you developing an intimate relationship though prayer? If not then dust that bible off and open God’s word and your heart and the Lord will speak to you. Verse of the Day Nehemiah 8:12 12 All the people went away to eat, to drink, to send portions and to celebrate a great festival, because they understood the words which had been made known to them.
