September 6, 2013 For Immediate Release Labrador MHAs frustrated with lack of response from the Department of Transportation and Works Torngat Mountains MHA Randy Edmunds and Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair MHA Lisa Dempster are expressing frustration over the lack of action from the Department of Transportation and Works regarding issues affecting their Labrador districts. “Residents of Nunatsiavut and Natuashish continue to face significant transportation issues, and my advocating on their behalf appears to be falling on deaf ears,” said Edmunds. Both Labrador districts have developed a significant business trade over the years, which is seriously impacted by challenges in shipping merchandise from region to region. The simple fact that one cannot ship out of Cartwright to the North Coast is problematic and costly. Cartwright is strategically located and can be a vital link for both the north and south coasts. Other transportation issues include the unreliability of the MV Northern Ranger, the transfer of the unused terminal building in Cartwright to the town, the condition of Route 510 north of Red Bay, the deplorable condition of the Labrador Straits highway, the Black Tickle road, and the refusal to use calcium on gravel roads in and near coastal communities. “All the transportation issues in Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair were brought to the attention of the Minister and his staff earlier this summer, but little or no action has been taken,” said Dempster. “I am calling on the Minister to work with both MHA Randy Edmunds and I to address the issues in a meaningful and timely manner and I look forward to his cooperation.” -30- Media Contact: Lauren Wiseman| Communications Specialist| Office of the Official Opposition| 729-5306| 631-8981 E copies @ liberaloppositionnl
