September Thanksgiving Pennsylvania German Thanksgiving, Schwenkfelder’s Day, Gedaechnisz Tag (September Thanksgiving), whichever you choose to call it is September 24th. A handful of Schwenkfelder’s (followers of Caspar Schenkfeld, a Silesian Reformation theologian) arrived in Philadelphia in 1733. A second group emigrated from Germany, arriving on September 22, 1734. Upon arrival they received their first fresh water in months, along with apples and fresh bread. The next day they swore allegiance to the British King (required of all German immigrants after 1727). The following day, September 24th, they spent expressing their gratitude to God for delivering them from persecution. This day is still commemorated with sharing a church service with a meal following, consisting of the same basic ingredients-apple butter, fresh bread, butter and water.
