September is almost here. That will mark the 27th Anniversary of the release of the first red wolves at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. For 27 years, wild red wolves have been living free in a tiny sliver of their historical range in coastal NC. For 27 years, a team of dedicated biologists has worked to ensure that this native species will thrive into the future. They are still working to achieve the Recovery Plan goals despite the vicious, non-stop assault on their efforts by a vocal handful of people who have subjected these dedicated people to a blistering scapegoating campaign. After months of relentless blaming and character assassination (usually hiding behind pseudonyms), their conclusion, posted on a public forum, is that virtually every aspect of the Red Wolf program has failed or has proven to be a complete charade from the start. We urge all our supporters will join us in thanking the USFWS Red Wolf Recovery Team for a few of their many accomplishments: (1) The red wolf is the first predator ever to be restored to the wild after being declared functionally extinct (meaning too few left to survive into the future). (2) The soft release - habituating wolves to their new environment by keeping them temporarily in holding areas (3) The pup fostering technique - wild parents raising captive-born pups with their own wild offspring. The comeback of the red wolf is one of modern wildlife managements greatest triumphs. THANK YOU, Red Wolf Recovery Team! (Photo: Chris Crowe)
