Septemer 28 26th Sunday of the Year : Matthew 21: 28-32 A Sinister Pschology Two brothers who were entirely different. The first one said no, but afterwards followed his fathers wish to work in the vineyard; the other one replied with a resounding yes but never went there. Who was a better person? Jesus answered that the one who said no and then later changed his mind and worked in the vineyard. To work in seminary formation is to encounter all these two types of behavior. What annoys me more is when a seminarian says yes and does not do it. He makes a promise to arrive punctually after a week end stay at home and returns to the seminary the last, and instead of accepting his fault, still insists that he wants to know the list of all those who came late with him -- to see whether the sanction he received was applied without favor to anybody. To say yes and to break your word reveals a sinister psychology. Like the Pharisee to whom Jesus applied this parable, the person suffers from a superiority complex that prevents him from accepting his faults, interested always in finding fault to another. Thats why, Jesus labelled the pharisees as persons unable to repent because they unconsciously believe that others need more repentance than they. Awareness that we are not superior to others should be constant. This makes it easier for us to extend our hand, join them in their laughter and tears. And we like to be with them partaking of our common need for repentance.
