Sequoia Saga Thirty years ago, my father gave me a sapling to plant in our yard. It was a Meta Sequoia aka Dawn Redwood, cousin of the giant California Redwood only smaller. Thought to be extinct, the tree was found to be alive and well and discovered in the 1930s in China. My father had studied geology before he decided to go to medical school and he was familiar with the fossilized leaves of this ancient tree. He planted one fifty years ago at his home and had given several others as gifts to friends and family. Its leaves turn a beautiful rust red in the fall before dropping. A year ago, my tree had three babies. The cone shaped seed pods had never sprouted before so I was surprised... I potted all of them and nursed them through the winter. Only one made it and this summers growth was three feet! I realized this fall that it had to be planted somewhere and soon and Anne and Derek agreed to take it for their farm. The following photos commemorate its journey to Pennsylvania. A little bit of history has moved on. Godspeed little tree.
