Serendipity (2001) - John Cusack is Jonathon Trager, executive producer for ESPN who has a chance meeting with Sara Thomas over some black cashmere gloves, falls for her, and as he is about to be married, thoughts of her permeate his mind. On one hand, Cusack embodies a textbook cold footed stereotypical man prior to his wedding. Forever is a scary word, and his panic certainly shows that. However, the overwhelming romanticism of him chasing down a girl from one night ten years is quite charming. His likeability quotient is high for the film because of the honorable way he goes about leaving his bride to be the day of the wedding. Funny to read, but its true. His chemistry with Kate Beckinsale really puts the love in this love story, and they dont even get physical to do it, which is rare in a love film. The idea of serendipity is comforting to some - destiny has a plan for everyone - but it is also equally tragic, for Jonathon and Sara to end up together, their fiances had to each be left. They even unwittingly help in their demise - so if you are the one being left, serendipity isnt comforting at all. However, the film works on many levels for romance, and Cusack was an ideal lead for this film, and having his real life friend Jeremy Piven as his casted best friend really added to the film. A must own for any fan of romance movies. Next up for Cusack, from 2003 its Identity.
