Serious collision on A171 Whitby to Guisborough road North Yorkshire Police is investigating a serious four-vehicle collision on the A171 Whitby to Guisborough road. It happened just past the Lythe turn-off towards Scaling Dam at about 5.15pm on New Year’s Eve (Wednesday 31 December 2014). Police, ambulance and fire crews were alerted to the scene with reports that one of the vehicles was on fire. Paramedics treated several casualties from the vehicles, with one man taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough with serious injuries. The stretch of road remains closed while police carry out a detailed examination of the collision scene and for the vehicles to be recovered. Local diversions will remain in place until further notice. Witnesses to the collision or anyone with information that could assist the investigation, is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1, and speak to the Force Control Room.
