Serious point this, although some may think Im joking: We have an unelected head of state, who together with her family cost the taxpayer hundreds of millions every year. Some people think they are wonderful, work incredibly hard, and are marvellous ambassadors for Britain, others think they are a self-serving, greedy, disfunctional bunch of parastitic scroungers, the only unknown is how many there are of the two viewpoints. The point is that no government will ever sanction a referendum on the royal family and whether we want the UK to be a democracy by actually electing a head of state, because they would be terrified of any possibility, no matter how slim of people voting to abolish the monarchy, so heres the idea: Scrap ALL state-funding of the monarchy, take all the revenue from the Crown Estates (which are actually ours anyway) and use it for the benefit of the taxpayer, charge them for using any MoD or government-owned transport etc, and pay them by a completely voluntary subscription or donation scheme, so that all the people who say how marvellous they are and how much they love the queen etc etc, can actually prove it by paying for them with their own money, rather than stealing republicans taxes and giving them to the monarchy. If they are as popular as the monarchists say, theyd be quids in and even richer than they are, Id be perfectly happy, no matter how much money they were given, as long as it was from people who actually wanted to give it, personally Id rather my taxes went to fund the NHS or housing the homeless. That would be real democracy in action.
