Seriously, folks... Everyone - EVERYONE - needs to take a close look at this decision. Take a look at what the justices have REALLY SAID HERE. You know, about the rights of people, and corporations. And religion. Alito asserts in the majority opinion that the decision “concerns only the contraceptive mandate and should not be understood to hold that all insurance-coverage mandates e.g., for vaccinations or blood transfusions must necessarily fail if they conflict with an employer’s religious beliefs.” If he is right, there are two equally bad possibilities going forward. Either the same court that promises, yet again today, that it will not probe the depth of a religious employer’s conviction, is implying that Christian Scientists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and, yes, the Wiccans, are not followers of real religions, and thus their religious objections will be more readily swept aside when they come before the courts. Seriously?? Do we want the Supreme Court determining which religion is recognized, and which just dont pass Constitutional muster? In THIS case, because the beliefs were sincere, deeply-held (and, yanno, Christian bible-based), theyre entitled to exemption. But, others, other religious beliefs, others sincere religious convictions, actually MENTIONED HERE, are not. As Justice Ginsburg said in her scathing dissent: Approving some religious claims while deeming others unworthy of accommodation could be perceived as favoring one religion over another, the very risk the [Constitutions] Establishment Clause was designed to preclude. The court, I fear, has ventured into a minefield.
