Sermon: SEASON OF CELEBRATION CLASSIFICATION OF SONGS SONG: A song is an arrangement of sounds with a message. CLASSIFICATION OF SONGS 1. SONGS OF REPENTANCE – These are songs seeking forgiveness from God after doing something e.g. Psa. 51:11-12 (Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me …” ) 2. SONGS OF PETITION - This song is an appeal for something e.g. “Lord prepare me to be a sanctuary, pure and holy, tried and true: with thanksgiving I’ll be a living sanctuary for you” 3. EVANGELISTIC SONGS – These are songs to draw the unbeliever to God and the saving grace of Christ.e.g. “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me, I once was lost but now I’m found …” 4. SONGS OF EXHORTATION- These are songs that edify us or encourage us. E.g. “Because He lives I can face tomorrow…” 5. SONGS OF RE-DEDICATION, VOWS AND PLEDGES - These are songs that make us rededicate or re-pledge ourselves to God e.g. “Yesu eee wo adwuma yeoo ye beye ohhh ye beye Nyame wo adwuma (Jesus your work and we pledge we will do God’s work) 6. SONGS OF OUR LOVE AND DESIRE FOR HIM- These are songs that express our desire to be with Him and our love for Him. e.g. “I just want to be where you are …” “As the deer panteth for the waters …” 7. WARFARE SONGS- These are battle songs, Warfare songs can charge and change the atmosphere drastically. e.g. “Let God arise and His enemies be scattered …” “Stand up stand up for Jesus ye soldiers of the cross…” 8. PROPHETIC SONGS: These are songs that talk about His coming e.g. “It won’t be long we will be leaving here …” 9. THANKSGIVING – These songs express gratitude to God for His acts of deliverance, healing, divine provision, protection, promotion, His faithfulness toward us etc. 10. PRAISE - PRAISE IS the expression of approval or admiration for God. Such songs just focus on God and Him alone; who He is, what He has done, would do His judgment, personality, names etc. These songs extol the beauty of Holiness and express and affirm our love and devotion and preference. They emphasize His might, wisdom, power, compassion, knowledge, faithfulness, supremacy, eternity, majesty etc. Hannah’s song of thanksgiving (1 Sam. 2:1-10) When Moses and Israel crossed the Red Sea Moses sang unto God (Ex. 15:1-2, 11) Praise has nothing to do with what is happening but what is about to happen. If the Lord has not done anything at all, He has saved you, Praise Him!
