Sermon Sneak Peak In Sundays passage from Luke (17:11-17), Jesus runs into ten lepers, unclean and outcast. They approach him for healing, but keep their distance, as was expected by the social mores of the day. In response, Jesus instructs them to go and show themselves to the local priest, promising by implication that they will be made well. And, indeed, as they travel they are made well, cleansed of their infirmity. When one of them notices, he turns back to express his gratitude, falling at Jesus feet in a posture of worship to give thanks. At this point, notice that the other nine did nothing wrong. In fact, they did exactly as Jesus told them to and presumably also enjoyed being healed. But when the one healed leper comes back, Jesus wants to know where the other nine are. Well, Jesus, theyre exactly where you told them to be. Though Jesus often does perplexing things, why in the world would he have expectations that these nine would do anything other than what he instructed them to? If you want different behavior, Jesus, perhaps you should be more specific. This is a text often used at Thanksgiving. Maybe you should give thanks you dont have to figure out what it means. But if you get any ideas before Sunday, Ill give thanks if youll let me know. Im going to call it And Jesus Laughed? What would you call it? -Bill Discipleflash Nov 1, 2013
