Serotonin is the “don’t worry, be happy” neurotransmitter. It is responsible for mood stability, sleep regulation, appetite control, and social engagement. Serotonin levels go down (sometimes dramatically) at certain times in a woman’s menstrual cycle. Being low on serotonin is a common cause of depression and anxiety. If you know someone who gets “stuck” on negative thoughts and can’t let go, it could be a sign of low serotonin.
