Services this weekend: April 26-27 Racial Exclusion in Appleton: Truth and Reconciliation by Nick Hoffman After the Civil War, Appleton was home to a growing number of blacks who were veterans, small business owners, and community leaders. Just a few decades later, growing racism led racial covenants that denied blacks home ownership, hotel occupancy, and access to many private businesses. We will talk about the citys history of racial exclusion, local anti-discrimination campaigns that initiated change, and why this legacy matters today. Nicholas J. Hoffman is Chief Curator at the History Museum at the Castle in Appleton, Wisconsin, and has written essays for the Wisconsin Magazine of History and Journal of American History. His lifelong interest in the social and cultural history of the Upper Midwest led to a masters in history from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Hoffman is the co-author of Wheel Fever: How Wisconsin Became a Great Cycling State and has received state and national awards for public history projects
