Session CFP for the 2015 AAG, co-sponsored by the Asian Geography - TopicsExpress

Session CFP for the 2015 AAG, co-sponsored by the Asian Geography Specialty Group. Development and Spectacle in the Southeast Asian City Capital cities across Southeast Asia are recognized as sites of aspirational urban development and grand spectacle. Whether it is the iconic architecture of Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, the waterfront spectacle of Bangkok or Hong Kong, or the landscapes of consumption promoted by Ho Chi Minh City or Manila, these cities are synonymously becoming more similar and dissimilar from the urban process found in other world and worlding cities. This session collects empirically and conceptually based papers that explore some of the emerging dynamics of development and spectacle in Southeast Asia. We seek papers that consider the processes of spectacle, aspiration, and globalization around topics that might include: · Waterfront development and spectacle · Planning processes and official narratives of urban space · Inclusion and exclusion arising from urban development projects · Chronologies and typologies of Southeast Asian spectacle · Competition and collaboration between Southeast Asian cities and other cities in the Global South · Perceptions of the Southeast Asian city from elsewhere: traveling policy and image Papers can either be single or comparative cases. Send statements of interest to Dr. Michael Glass ([email protected]). Titles and abstracts should be received no later than October 1, 2014, and final papers will be due to the discussant no later than March 20, 2015.
