Seven days before Beethovens birthday, and what better than the Allegretto from the 7th symphony? Dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries (no, not of the McDonalds family), this symphony was considered by Beethoven himself to be one of his best works. The Allegretto--an ostinato rhythm with double variation--was so well received at its first performance that the movement was immediately encored. I played a simple piano arrangement of it in my second year of piano lessons, still remember the delight of the piece, and have loved it ever since!
