Seven lines of instruction from God’s Word concerning the attitude that Christians should exhibit toward their PASTOR. 1. Forsake not God’s Man: Deuteronomy 12:19, “Take heed to thyself that thou forsake not the Levite as long as thou livest upon the earth.” The Levite in the Old Testament was the minister in the house of God, the equivalent to the pastor in the New Testament. 2. Do not Misuse God’s Man: II Chronicles 36:15-16, “And the Lord God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he has compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, till there was no remedy.” In most churches today the pastor is used for everything except that for which the Lord called him! 3. Have a Right Attitude Toward God’s Man: I Corinthians 16:15-16, “I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saint.) That ye submit yourselves unto such, and to every one that helpeth with us, and laboureth.” We are instructed to have a submissive spirit and attitude toward God’s man. 4. Rebuke not an Elder: I Timothy 5:1, “Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren.” Let all those church members who think they have a right to stand in the pastor’s face and give him a piece of their mind – take notice! 5. Respect His Position: II Corinthians 5:20, “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us; we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.” To disrespect God’s man is ultimately to disrespect the Christ he represents! 6. He is your Overseer: I Peter 5:1-4, “Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind.” He has been placed over you by the Lord who is over him! 7. Don’t listen to Accusations against him: I Timothy 5:19, “Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.” Don’t let others fill your ears with complaints against your pastor.
