Seventh Grade Colts Finish Undefeated By Ray Glasscock Last year the current 7th grade class played for the Concho Valley YMCA heavy weight championship. They won and their parents and fans couldn’t wait to see them enter “official” junior high football as Sonora Colts. They didn’t disappoint as they defeated Wall 35 to 6, Harper 48 to 0, Ozona 28 to 0, Ballinger 40 to 0, Alpine 22 to 14, Coahoma 44 to 6, Reagan County 14 to 6, and Stanton 20 to 6. This past Thursday, only the Crane Golden Cranes’ 7th Grade team stood between the Colts and an undefeated season. It turned out to be a very easy game as their opponent was extremely over-matched by our Colts. The Colts won by a score of 49 to 0. The Colts scored 300 points in their eight game schedule for an average of 37.5 points per game. The Cranes kicked off to start the game. The ball went over Wesley Dutton’s head. Dutton retreated to the Colts’ nine-yard line, picked up the football, and raced 91 yards for the first touchdown of the game. Dutton started an option play to his right. When no Crane player came to threaten his progress, he kept the ball and easily scored the two-point conversion. In only 16 seconds, the Colts had scored eight points. When Brandon Martinez kicked off short, the Cranes looked confused at the bouncing football. John Deleon recovered for the Colts at the Cranes’ 41-yard line. JR Velasquez took the handoff from Dutton and raced for a 25-yard gain to the 16-yard line. Dutton faked to the man in motion and ran to his left. Several Cranes hit him at the 13-yard line, but Dutton broke their tackles and was finally dragged down at the six-yard line. Velasquez scored the second touchdown on a run off right tackle. The two point try failed when Dutton’s pass was tipped and intercepted. With 5:12 left in the first quarter, the score was 14 to 0. (Seventh grade games use six minute quarters.) Martinez kicked off high and short. Dylan Taylor recovered for the Colts. Dutton threw deep on first and second down but didn’t connect with his receivers. On third down, Velasquez was tackled after a two-yard gain. On fourth and eight, Dutton started the option play to the left. At the last moment, he pitched to Velasquez who was pushed out of bounds at the 23-yard line. Dutton started to his right, spun, and threw the throw back screen to Martin Alvarez. Alvarez caught the ball near the line of scrimmage and ran through several Crane players for the third touchdown of the game. A fumbled handoff kept the Colts from completing the two point PAT. The Cranes trailed 20 to 0 with 3:28 left in the first quarter, and they had not yet run an offensive play. Martinez kicked off deep, and the Cranes returned it to their 31-yard line. Alvarez tackled the Cranes’ first runner at the 32-yard line. Carlos Mendoza and Hailey Guerra stopped the next play for no gain. A run blitz by Dutton resulted in the Cranes losing two yards on 3rd and eight. Crane got off a good punt, and the Colts took over at their 49-yard line. Dutton took the snap and handed the ball to Velasquez as he passed in motion in front of Dutton. Velasquez handed off to Taylor on a double reverse. Taylor passed to Dutton who gained 15 yards down the near sideline. Willie B. Munoz scored untouched on the pitch sweep from Dutton. The touchdown play covered 41 yards. Dutton scored the two-point conversion of a keeper up the middle. With 29 seconds left in the first quarter, the Colts led 28 to 0. Alvarez and Alex Castilleja stopped the first run of the next Crane drive. On third down, Evan Shannon shook off an obvious holding attempt to record a tackle for a loss. (The officials, knowing the obvious mismatch in the teams, never called a penalty the entire game.) Martinez gained 20 yards on the first carry after the Cranes’ short punt. Chance Anderson rushed up the middle for a twelve-yard gain. Velasquez logged a 24-yard touchdown on the next carry. Anderson got the two points on the fullback quick hitter between the center and right guard. The Colts led 36 to 0 at the end of the first half. The Cranes received the second half kickoff. Their drive lasted three plays when Velasquez recovered a fumble. Dutton got his first completion on a Johnny Manziel like bullet pass for a bubble screen play. Then he lofted a touch pass into the right corner of the end zone for a touchdown catch by Taylor. Martinez split the uprights for the first kicking PAT that I have seen by a Colt team. The scoreboard read 43 to 0 with 1:50 left in the third quarter. Sometime during the third quarter, the coaches agreed to a running clock. Munoz scored the last touchdown of the game on a 14 yard run. Martinez tried another kick but it was blocked. The game ended without the Cranes ever making a first down.
