Seventy years ago today, the concentration camps at Auschwitz were liberated by allied forces. While the U.S. didnt enter the war explicitly to free these prisoners (Pearl Harbor gave us little choice), we like to look back on this period as one of moral certitude - that is, it was a good war because we were fighting against such unquestionable barbarity. I am troubled, though, that no such concern is extended to the 200,000 prisoners who languish in North Koreas internment camps to this day. Why is this situation less deserving of moral imperative status? It bugs the hell out of me that our government can find plenty of blood and treasure to pour into volatile regions that didnt need or want it, but we remain conspicuously inactive against a dictatorship so dystopian it would make George Orwell blush. *Fun bonus activity for my fellow armchair generals/diplomats: how could we even attempt to remedy this problem without reducing Seoul and Pyongyang to radioactive ash?
