Several days ago my wife told me about a dream she had in which she was having a dispute with her husband. This husband-figure in her dream vacillated between being me and Benedict Cumberbatch. I told her thats fine, I dont blame her for having dreams about other men, a person cannot be held accountable for her unconscious desires, et c. Thats what I said, of course, because it was the right thing to say. Secretly I have been trying to take revenge by having a dream that involved my becoming erotically entangled with Jessica Chastain, Julianne Moore, Amy Adams, or Emma Stone—any one would be fine; Im not picky—but all Ive managed so far was a dream in which I was Popeye and I swapped torsos with Olive Oyl.
