Several friends have stated this and I am going to state it too. I have no problems with someone telling me Happy Holidays. Likewise I dont have issues with being told Merry Christmas either. For one thing, between Thanksgiving and New Years, there are several holidays, including Thanksgiving and New Years. There isnt just Christmas. Not all Christians celebrate Christmas. Some non-Christians or people with no religions at all do so. There is Hanukkah, Yule, Kwanzaa, Saturnalia, Diwali...you get the picture. The Christmas as we know it is a mesh of many different holiday traditions anyway. Just look up the origins of Christmas trees, Santa Claus, elves, etc. and you will find a lot of Pagan and Norse traditions in there. Of you could be like George Costanza and the Seinfeld gang and celebrate Festivus for the Restivus. Whatever floats someones boat. The way I look at it, Happy Holidays is a generic covering of all bases. People start saying it around Thanksgiving and this covers it, as well as New Years. Which I dont celebrate at all, and never did. But I dont get offended if someone tells me Happy New Year. Likewise someone who doesnt do Christmas shouldnt be offended to be told Merry Christmas. You dont always know what any given person youre going to meet celebrates or not...so I see no problem with Happy Holidays. And if you tell me Merry Christmas, I havent got a problem with that either. The only thing that really bugs me is the abbreviation of X-Mas...but even then I dont get all huffy and nitpicky about it. Whatever you celebrate, I hope you enjoy your holidays and even if you dont celebrate anything, there will still be days off, and time off to be with family. Make the best of it.
