Several in the nutritional community have lined up against allowing the yellow, red, white, and russet potatoes in the WIC program. They say its because they dont want Congress making these decisions, which I totally understand, but what happens when the USDA get its wrong? Shouldnt Congress intervene? Isnt it their job to provide oversight of the Government? Isnt that what our Constitution says? The USDA used 1990s data and old outdated dietary guidelines when they excluded potatoes from WIC. The new US dietary guidelines are encouraging us to double our consumption of starchy vegetables and recognize that we dont get enough potassium. We should always use the very best available science and data when making good policy decisions about nutrition. Thats all we ask.
