Several laws passed last session by the West Virginia Legislature have provisions that will go into effect the first of the year. Although most laws are effective 90 days from passage (meaning some time in July) or immediately, other laws have provisions in them that will go into effect this January. One of the laws in that category raises the state minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.75 an hour by 2016. For 2015, the minimum wage will be $8 an hour. Another law that has been watched with hawk eyes from residents in the Kanawha Valley — the “tank bill” or water resources protection — says aboveground storage tanks must be registered with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection by Jan. 1, 2015. Here is a list of other laws that have provisions taking effect Jan. 1, 2015: SB 327 - Updating terms in Corporation Net Income Tax Act SB 373 - Relating to water resources protection HB 4039 - Authorizing miscellaneous boards and agencies to promulgate legislative rules HB 4159 - Updating the meaning of federal adjusted gross income and certain other terms HB 4184 - Relating to the West Virginia Tourism Development Act HB 4220 - Relating to waiver of jury trial in claims arising from consumer transactions HB 4256 - Amending the annual salary schedule for members of the state police HB 4283 - Raising minimum wage HB 4339 - Ensuring that moneys from the Solid Waste Authority Closure Cost Assistance Fund are available to facilitate the closure of the Elkins-Randolph County Landfill and the Webster County Landfill HB 4425 - Giving the Superintendent of State Police authority to hire additional staff HB 4619 - Authorizing innovation school districts To find out more about the laws, or read them, click HERE.
