Several months ago, I made the crazy decision that I wanted to get another horse. I decided the safest option was to lease. I searched around for a horse that I could lease to own. I ended up finding a woman who lived an hour away that was selling Chestnut Quarter horse named Justin. He is 14.3 hh with a blaze and three white socks. He was handsome with a large kind eye, sweet, and curious. The Test Ride Justins owner, owns land in a beautiful state forest. She told me that I could test ride Justin on the trail! This was very exciting to me because it was a beautiful sunny day, in early July, and the property was so beautiful. While she got her horse ready, I tacked up Justin. We started off down the road. Justins head was high and he immediately began to rotate his head, stop, or spin around. I urged him forward and we rounded the corner and headed down a deserted dirt road. Again, Justin tried to find ways to get rid of me. The whole ride, he tested me my level of comfort-ability. Yet, for some reason, when we returned to the barn, at the end of our ride, I turned to Justins owner and said, Ill takem. The Ride Home After our long journey, we finally arrived at the barn. I walked Justin around the pasture. He was high headed; snorting and looking about as one might expect. Although he wanted to stay close, he was still very curious and open-minded to the new surroundings. I led him to the run-in. He was hesitant at first. So, I walked under the structure and told him that it was safe and fun. He wasnt taking MY word for it. So, he plunged his nose into the lush tall grass and continued watching me with one nervous eye, concerned that I would be eaten alive! I laughed at him and encouraged him to take another step. He followed me in this time and I lavished him with praise. I was so relieved when I finally heard him release a huge sigh. We returned to the expectant crowd watching us by the gate. I told them that I wanted to lunge him a little before I turned him loose. Justin was very cooperative, considering. He gave me a nice little trot in both directions and halted without fuss. Finally, I invited him to come close and loved on him. It couldnt have gone better!
