Several months ago we received a call about a foul odor emanating from a small home that resembled animal feces. Now that the court case has passed and the house has been remodeled, we can post these photos without concern of revealing the identity of the homeowner. Upon investigating the issue we discovered the individual had dozens of cats, most of them emaciated, anemic, and ridden with ear mites. 25 cats were taken from the home initially, and 9 more who primarily resided in the attic and holes in the walls had to be humanely trapped. Sadly, one was found deceased upon our arrival, making a total of 35 cats. The home was in such terrible condition that the owner was evicted and it was condemned by our Code Enforcement department. The owner was charged with having too many animals as well as animal cruelty. Thanks to our no-kill partnership with PETS, Inc, all of the cats were transported to their nonprofit facility where they received proper medical treatment. Those that were socialized were put up for adoption; the feral ones are now residing at a loving barn home where they can live out their days never having to worry about where their next meal will come from again. If it were not for the efforts of PETS Inc., we would not be able to uphold our no-kill status. We are very grateful that our city has adopted such a progressive and humane way of handling the animals in our care. In addition, we encourage our citizens and those of other cities and counties to always report suspicious activity to ensure that animals who are suffering can be rescued!
