Several of my FB friends commented that they had no idea what Auld Lang Syne means. Youre in good company for sure -- remember that hilarious scene in When Harry Met Sally and Harry goes on and on about the song. Check it out. A bit about the song. It was a poem written by Robert Burns in 1787. It is written in Scots -- one of the three languages most commonly spoken in Scotland. It was set to music in a folk melody well known to 18th century Scots. The title Auld Lang Syne means old long since -- or we would understand as times gone by. It is a song about friendship and remembrance. The song is sung on Burns Night, January 25, when Scotland celebrates its most famous poet, Robbie Burns. It has gradually become a standard for New Years Eve. Heres The Cast singing the original melody and pure Scots. Whether you understand all the words or not -- its a lovely, lilting tune to be shared with friends. Enjoy.
