Several years ago I began working as a civilian paramedic for the Rotterdam Police Department. During that time I was fortunate to meet several young people who as a salty old medic I thought were the future of EMS, and Emergency Services in general. One of those bright shining stars was a young man named Glenn Urys. An EMS member, volunteer firefighter in the community, who would later become part of the fire brigade at Knolls, Glenn was a glimmer of hope to us old guys that the future of Emergency Services was being left in good hands. While I only saw Glenn from time to time, on calls, at Dyngus Day events(when I could remember), he always had a smile on his face and it was easy to see the attraction that people had to him. Unfortunately I had a chance to meet up again with Glenn last week after he was critically injured in a freak accident at his home. Being the on duty crew, we were called to tend to him in his darkest hour. While many would be frozen in fear and emotion, the crew, along with myself did all we could for our friend, and colleague despite knowing that survival was dismal at best. Some would say it was a cruel twist of fate that we were called to care for our friend and co-worker, I call it an honor and privilege that even in his darkest hour, his life, and personality allowed us all to re-examine our lives, and how we live and deal with others. My thoughts, and prayers are with the family and friends of Glenn today as they say their final farewell. It is not good-bye, rather till we meet again. Rest in Peace!
