Several years ago, a colleague approached me regarding the Anthony Nolan Trust, advising that there was a lack of ethnic males on the register. I decided to put my name down and a year or so later, I was advised that my bone marrow type had matched a young lady in Italy. 21 years old, 4 brothers, not a single one of them matched, nor anyone in Italy or the world, bar myself. Overcome by the statistics and emotion of how unique the link was with this young lady, I proceeded with an easy, harmless, routine transplant. I had produced and donated more than enough cells to support her condition. A year later I was asked to donate again, however she passed away a few days later before the process. My little sacrifice had given her the comfort, by the Will of Allah, of an extended life; more time with her loved ones, that we were unique in the world due to our match. I have never underestimated the issue of organ donation and the beauty of life it can extend to others, with a little sacrifice from myself.
