Several years ago at one of the Paw Paw festivals I witnessed a moment of humour and tragedy simultaneously down near the old Tastee Freeze/Subway location that I will never forget. Someone had set up a floating green out in the lake about 100 - 120 feet from shore and festival goers could buy balls and hit them into this hula hoop (situated on top of the floating green) apparently for the chance at winning some BIG prize...?? Long story short, a guy had brought his OWN clubs down to increase his likelihood of sticking a ball in the small hula hoop area on the floating raft/green that was created--(mistake #1). His young son was pestering his father, Dad, let me try...Dad let me try...Dad let me try!!! Finally, the Father gave in and let his son have a hit with his (presumably expensive) brand named clubs that he had lugged over to the tee off area from the trunk of his car. (Apparently the standard set of clubs that were available for every other participant to use were not suitable for this individual/world class golfer). So...the young boy pulled out his fathers three wood to make sure that he would get the distance...and with a mighty swing at the tee---he MISSED the golf ball completely as his hands simultaneously let go of the club.... The golf club flew through the air majestically for about 50 feet before making a beautiful splash into the muddy waters of Maple Lake about 30 feet from shore. Several onlookers (including myself) had to turn the opposite direction to contain our laughter. The Father/owner of the club looked like his ears were going to burst with steam from his outrage. Needless to say, I think we could add a nice golf club to the list of vanished items in this general proximity of Paw Paw :)
