Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 10pm SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 10pm this evening for all of western Massachusetts. The watch includes Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin and Berkshire Counties in Massachusetts. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to enter northwest Massachusetts between 4pm and 6pm and progress eastward during the evening hours. Some of the storms could be strong to severe, especially when they first enter Massachusetts from the west. The primary threat is damaging winds, as some gusts could reach 70 mph. Isolated large hail to 1.5″ in diameter is also possible. The line of showers and thunderstorms is expected to reach the Springfield area between 6pm and 8pm this evening. By this time, the storms should be in the process of weakening. Even so, dangerous cloud to ground lightning and heavy downpours are likely.
