Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds for people in the Metropolitan, Hunter, Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Riverina, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts Issued at 4:12 am EST on Thursday 26 September 2013. DAMAGING WINDS FOR SOUTHEAST NSW TODAY Weather Situation A strong cold front will cross NSW today with gale-force westerly winds expected for the southeast third of the state. Much colder conditions are expected for the Snowy Mountains today with snow lowering to the 1300 metre level. Damaging winds averaging around 65 km/h with peak gusts up to 100 km/h are forecast for parts of the Snowy Mountains, Illawarra, Metropolitan, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Australian Capital Territory, South Coast and Hunter forecast districts this morning and early afternoon. Winds in the Riverina and South West Slopes districts may also reach gale force this morning. The alpine peaks may experience winds around 80 km/h with peak gusts of 125 km/h this morning. Blizzard conditions are expected for the Snowy Mountains above about 1300 metres today. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. Keep clear of fallen power lines. For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
