Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds for people in the Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts Issued at 10:42 am EST on Friday 19 July 2013. DAMAGING WINDS FOR SOUTHEASTERN RANGES TODAY Weather Situation A strong cold front is moving over inland New South Wales this morning, and will move towards eastern parts of the state later in the day. Vigorous north to northwesterly winds are developing with this system. Damaging winds exceeding 80 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 120 km/h are expected over parts of the Snowy Mountains forecast district above 1900 metres today. Damaging wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h are possible about exposed parts of the Southern Tablelands, Australian Capital Territory, and Central Tablelands forecast districts today, mainly in areas above 1000 metres. Thredbo Automatic Weather Station has reported mean wind speeds of 100 km/hr and gusts to 132 km/h overnight. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. Keep clear of fallen power lines. For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
