Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds, heavy rain, abnormally high tides and damaging surf for people in the Metropolitan, Illawarra, South Coast and Southern Tablelands forecast districts Issued at 4:42 am EST on Tuesday 25 June 2013. Further heavy rain at times for the NSW coast and adjacent ranges between about Sydney and Moruya, with possible gale force winds and damaging surf on the coastal fringe. Conditions moderating later today. Weather Situation A broad trough of low pressure lies over the western Tasman Sea and crosses the New South Wales coast near Sydney, with rain and strong winds on its southern flank. A number of small Lows are forming within this broader trough zone. One of these crossed the coast just south of Sydney on Monday evening, another is forecast to approach the coast this morning. These Lows bring pulses of gale force winds and heavy rainfall. The Lows weaken gradually after crossing the coast but are carrying rain well inland. The strong winds are generating damaging surf along the coast south of the trough. Conditions are expected to moderate later today as the trough slowly weakens and edges further offshore. WARNING IN DETAIL Winds of 50 km/h with damaging gusts reaching 90 km/h at times are forecast for parts of the Illawarra and the South Coast north of Moruya, and may affect Sydney on Tuesday morning or early afternoon. The damaging gusts are most likely in coastal and exposed areas. Abnormally high tides which may cause sea water flooding of low lying areas, and very heavy surf which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion are forecast for parts of the Metropolitan, Illawarra and South Coast forecast districts north of Moruya. Beach conditions in these areas will be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas. Rain and local thunderstorms over the Illawarra, northern parts of the South Coast, eastern and northern parts of the Southern Tablelands and eastern parts of the Sydney Metropolitan area will be heavy at times, leading to flash flooding. The Severe Weather Warning for parts of the Snowy Mountains forecast district has been cancelled, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings will be issued if necessary. OBSERVED WEATHER Since 9am Monday, the heaviest rainfall totals have been in the area inland from Nowra to Moruya. The highest totals (to 4am Tuesday) are 135 mm at Yalwal (southwest of Nowra), 126 mm at Mongarlowe (Braidwood area) and 121 mm at Nowra. In the previous 24 hours to 9am Monday, heaviest falls were Norah Head (Central Coast) 126 mm and Ulladaulla (South Coast) 112 mm of rain. The strongest wind gust recorded has been 46 knots (85 km/h) at Montague Island (South Coast) on Monday afternoon. Bellambi (Wollongong) had gusts of up to 44 knots (81 km/h) on Monday evening. The wave ride buoy offshore from Batemans Bay recorded significant wave heights of 5 metres and maximum waves of 10 metres on Monday evening.
