Shabbat Shalom. Light candles 5:07; Shabbat ends 5:58. Sermon: "The best things in life are not free." Dear Oxfordians This week started with a bang, with Chief Rabbi’s Indaba III a resounding success. The talks were of course a great source of inspiration. For me the most powerful aspect of the event was the sheer number of people seated in one huge hall for the plenary sessions, and the throngs who moved around the passages and escalators of Sandton’s convention centre in between sessions—a true demonstration of the power of Johannesburg Jewry. Chazan Gudelsky is still away in the USA this week but we welcome Chazan Jared Abelson back to Oxford (he was here once a few months ago). He will be accompanied by the choir and services will be held in the main shul. The birthday brocha this Shabbat is co-sponsored Ronald Woolf and Gertie Feinstein, both born in June—Mazal Tov and PG many many more. The fast of 17 Tammuz is observed this Tuesday, starting at 5:42 a.m. and ending at 5:43 p.m.—that’s exactly 12 hours and one minute! Three weeks of mourning begin then and will end on Tisha B’Av (16/07). If you need a haircut, Monday is the last day for this. I want to give a public thanks to our local city councillor, Marcelle Ravid, who had the Shul’s water supply restored. Due to a billing error our account stands at over R800,000 and they shut down the water this week. Thanks to Marcelle’s intervention the pipes were flowing again within 24 hours. Have a wonderful Shabbat at Oxford. Rabbi Yossi Chaikin
