Shack fires major concern Floris Steenkamp Thursday, July 3, 2014 - 09:15 Coastal Walvis Bay mayor, Uilika Nambahu called on the Walvis Bay public this week for innovative ideas to curb shack fires and the subsequent loss of life and loss of property. Shack fires reached unprecedented levels in recent months in Walvis Bay and Nambahu attributes this to the winter temperatures when shack dwellers rely more on heating and cooking appliances to stay warm and to put a warm meal on the table. Nambahu made these remarks this week at the local authority council’s monthly meeting. “The Port City of Walvis Bay has experienced an unprecedented increase in shack fires in recent weeks. These increases of fire incidences are particularly alarming since if human lives is lost as a result of these fire incidences this is not to say that shack fires and other fires destroying and reducing formal dwellings and properties to ashes have not worried us, but our concerns are grave every instant a human life is taken or when a near-miss occurs or the existence of a risk to human life” said Nambahu. Nambahu further explained awareness campaigns so far delivered little results. “It is already in the public domain that the Municipal Council of Walvis Bay, the Government of the Republic of Namibia and by extension our line ministry and the National Housing Enterprise are hard at work towards the provision of affordable and dignified living spaces, but while this is ongoing fire has not declared a moratorium and continues to place both people and property in harm’s way. As such, I would therefore like to place a call to members of our community to look at creative ways aimed at solving this problem. My call requires members of the public to engage council with proposals aimed at mitigating the causes of fires or creating warning systems to protect human lives to mention but a few,” said Nambahu.
