Shad Goodie Mid Season Breakdown: Chicago Bears Can the Bears turn the 2nd half of the Season into a special one??? A lot can be said about the season thus far. Lets start off with what this team is on paper... Offense: starting with the Franchise QB Cutler has 2,093 yards 17 TDs 103 rushing yards. With a QBR of 62.4 which is 12th in the league. Hes on pace for his best statical season in his 9 year career. How ever in each of the Bears 5 losses hes had at least 2 turnovers; 14 total which leads the league. Tressman was brought in to correct those negative aspects of #6 game to help push him to his heralded talent. So far the offense as a whole has been inconsistent: the week to week game planing from the coach his been average at best with is reflected in the 13th overall ranking in that unit league wide. The offensive line has been below average this year and banged up. The running game has been nothing less than mediocre even with Forte being the 5 most productive RB in the league. The bread & butter should be the passing game: however early on the 2 top targets fought injury and have yet to find a stable 3rd option. You combine all of this you get a offense thats only averaging 22ppg. Down from last years 28ppg. Defense: starting and ending with the line of scrimmage. The Bears and Phil Emery threw over $35mil in the Defensive Line and with the exception of vet DTJay Ratliff(whos missed 2 games) and DE Willie Young(7.5 sacks all in 4 of the 8 games) nobody has lived up to those contracts. Jared Allen has been a ghost, Lamar Houston also but now on IR. This is key because the lack of talent at the 2nd and 3rd level of the defense. Rookie CB Kyle Fuller has been the lone bright spot in the secondary in which weve seen CB Charles Tillman go down for the year, FS Chris Conte turn into the human glassman and CB Tim Jennings look like a shell of has All Pro self from 2 years ago. No need to discuss the trash at LB because no one player from that unit has registered more than 50 tackles or 3 sacks. Couple all this with a incompetent D-Coordinator in Mel Tucker who went from vaunted hybrid defense to something Toyota would feel disrespected. Its not good. Even tho this unit is ranked 21st in yards given up they are 28th in ppg giving up 28ppg. Special Teams: nothing special about this unit period. With all this said I seen on film 3 things the Bears could address or to use the common phrase at Hallas Hall clean up that could change this bottom feeding team to a squad that would be a dark horse Super Bowl pick: #1. Home Field Advantage, the Bears have 8 remaining games. 5 of which are on the Lakefront. Only 2 (Lions and Cowboys) of the remaining teams are currently playoff bound. One 2 (Saints, Cowboys and Packers) have offenses ranked in the top 10. The Bears offensively at home under Tressman avg 27 PPG at home. *Nugget when Bears score 24 Pts they are a .700 ball club. #2. Go Big Or Go Home, very simple the Bears have lacked the big play in the run/pass. Consider last year the Bears lead the league in plays over 25yrds this season Forte has 0 rushes for over 20yrs and Jeffery/Marshall combine for only 5 plays for 25yrds or more. The Bears got tons of PI penalties on opposing defenses even if they didnt make the catch. The offense hasnt tested the defenses enough allowing teams to cover 2 and cover 6 them to death. #3. Play Pissed, the Bears should feel disrespected and disappoint in the performance thus far. If this team plays with the edge and swag we saw in Atlanta for the remaining games they stand a chance to dance in this years playoffs. Thoughts???
